PISTON RINGS TECH NOTE:

Measuring Ring Gap
Using a squaring tool put the ring in the bore to be used and measure the ring gap to make certain it is correct for the bore size and application. When measuring the ring gap it is recommended that the ring be below the top of the block at least one inch to avoid any taper from bore recession

Ring Filing Procedures
Ring gap should be filed using a ring filing tool.
Ring gap should be filed in an inward direction and square to the sides.

Ring Gap Charts
The charts below show proper ring gap measurements.  There are three different charts so be sure to use the correct chart for your application.  Chart 1 is to be used with LC Engineering’s Gas Nitride Rings only!  Chart 2 is used for our Hastings brand or Total Seal brand (non-gapless) rings.  Chart 2 is also used for our Total Seal Gapless 2nd rings (applications that have a 2nd ring gapless application).  Chart 3 is used for our Total Seal Gapless top ring sets only. 
All measurements are shown in inches so you will either need to measure your bore in inches or convert your metric measurement to inches.  To convert millimeters to inches you will need to divide the millimeter measurement by 25.4.  For example; a 94mm bore would convert to 3.700 bore (94 ÷ 25.4 = 3.70078740…..).  LC Engineering also has a conversion table in the back of our catalog for a quick reference check.

Determining Ring Gap
To determine the correct ring end gap look for your application in the charts above.
ALL BORES MUST BE CONVERTED TO INCHES.
Example: Below is an example only, make sure to use the charts above to find you correct ring gap measurement!!
Bore size is 81mm
81mm/25.4= 3.189 inches
(3.189” x .005)= .016”
.016”is the minimum allowable clearance.

Important Notes
Ring sets are manufactured to fit specific bores. For every .001” over the intended bore size, ring gap will increase by .00314”
Remove any burrs from the piston and the piston ring, they should not have any, but check!

Ring Break-In Procedure
This is a basic ring break-in procedure, make sure to follow any manufactures procedures or contact our tech support line with any questions. 
Do not use synthetic oil for break-in.  For street applications we do not recommend running synthetic oil until you have put at least 3,000 to 5,000 miles on the engine.  For race applications we recommend running at least 50 laps/passes before switching to synthetic oil.  Do not let the engine idle for any extended period of time as this can cause the rings to not break-in properly.  Test run vehicle at 35 mph and accelerate at full throttle from 35 mph to 55 mph.  Repeat at least ten times, but make sure to avoid any kickdown on automatic transmission vehicles.  Cars may be driven normally after this but sustained speeds should be avoided.  All vehicles should be broken in with light duty use, for trucks do not tow or haul heavy loads.  You should also avoid lugging the engine.
